Why we review Credit Unions:

Credit Unions are often considered geographically small, irrelevant and just do not have the depth and breadth of services that big banks have to succeed in today's technology driven world. Mysmallbank.com believes differently.

In fact Mysmallbank.com believes Credit Unions provide a superior customer service experience, with attractive products and services and provide its members competitive savings and mortgage rates. Additionally Credit Unions provide critical support to small businesses owners and the agricultural community which is often left behind by the big banks. For example, by leverage local deposits from its members, a local Credit Unions can provide loans back to local businesses and customers from the same community. A win for the entire community.

Mysmallbank.com feels compelled to find the best credit unions and community banks in order to write a small review. These reviews are to help you learn more about community banks, possibly one that's in your area that you might be interested in. In this review we are choosing the following local Credit Union:

Location: New Hartford, NY

Headquartered: 4451 Commercial Drive, New Hartford, NY

Branches: 5.

Year Established: 1938

History:

As described on their website: The credit union was founded in 1938 as the Utica Teachers Federal Credit Union. It was founded by eleven teachers who at the time found it difficult to secure credit during the great depression. The teachers applied to the National Credit Union Administration for a credit union charter and Utica Teachers FCU was born.

In 1992, Utica Teachers FCU officially changed their name to First Source Federal Credit Union to better reflect the broader membership.  As a result First Source serves anyone who works, lives, worships or attends school in Oneida and Herkimer Counties. Additionally the credit union has slowly grown over the years from its single location at its foundation to operating five branch locations (New Hartford, North Utica, South Utica, Herkimer, Rome), a call center, and an ATM on the Utica College campus.

Currently First Source Federal CU has $656 million in assets, 5 branches and over 51,000 members. ibanknet

New Hartford is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 22,166. The name of New Hartford was provided by a settler family from Hartford, Connecticut.

The Village of New Hartford was incorporated in 1870.  The village's founding reaches back to 1788 when Jedediah Sanger came to setup his grist mill on the Sauquoit Creek. Learn more: New Hartford Historical Society

Finally we found that First Source Federal Credit Union is a federally insured credit union through NCUA (Note 1) .

Review:

Mysmallbank.com did take the time to read reviews on First Source Federal Credit Union (FSFCU) knowing that reviews only provide a partial picture of the Credit Union. What we mean by this is that reviews do not always reflect the true banking experience you will receive at one of their branches.

First Source Federal Credit Union's long history of being focused on their members is clearly reflected in the reviews found on Google, Yelp and other platforms. They have an incredibly high customer satisfaction rate. In fact when I see comments such as "They put the customer first and work for you.", it clearly shows this is a credit union you want to go to in order to help you with all of your financial needs. I could not find any serious issues, problems or concerns potential customers may have with First Source Federal Credit Union.

But there is more! employees working at the credit union also have a high rate of satisfaction, for example, an almost perfect score on Indeed! . This clearly proves that First Source Federal CU has a great working environment and we all know that good working environment reflect well with the members experience. Some of the benefits working at First Source FCU mentioned included profit sharing, matching 401, good management and a great place to start a career.

Giving Back to the Communities they Serve

One aspect of community banking that I love is their endless drive to give back to the communities they serve and First Source Federal CU does this in a remarkable way. In one year alone First Source gave $250,000 and accumulated 400 volunteer hours to help more than 100 local organizations. Incredibly this credit union has helped the following groups and organizations:

Root Farm Utica Zoo

Ride for Missing Children

Veterans

Utica College

Utica Children’s Museum

Relay for Life

Stevens Swan Humane Society

House of the Good Shepherd

Mohawk Valley Health System

Banzai Financial Literacy Program

Given the customer and employee high satisfaction rates along with their incredible giving and long service helping small businesses and residents of New Hartford since 1938; we are naming First Sources Federal Credit Union A Top choice, Credit Union. (Note 2) So if you're looking for a great community based credit union and you live or plan to live in the areas First Source serves, this could be a great financial institution for you.
